Built in the early 12th century for the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat spans more than 400 acres — the largest religious structure in the world. Its towers, causeways and miles of bas-relief were raised from millions of sandstone blocks floated from a quarry more than 30 miles away.
Angkor Wat sits within Angkor, once the largest pre-industrial city on Earth — perhaps 750,000 people, sustained by an enormous engineered web of canals and reservoirs. Nearly a mile of continuous, finely carved bas-relief wraps the temple's galleries.
The temple's precise alignment to the spring-equinox sunrise, the cosmological cycles encoded in its measurements, and the sheer logistics of moving millions of tons of stone raise the same questions of ancient know-how that run through this entire journey.
