Perhaps the strangest ruins on Earth — enormous blocks cut as if by machine, high on the Bolivian Altiplano.
Part of the Tiwanaku complex near Lake Titicaca, Puma Punku is a scatter of huge andesite and sandstone blocks — some over 100 tons — cut with flat faces, crisp right angles and identical H-shaped modules, as though mass-produced to a template.
Tiwanaku was a ceremonial capital that may have held 10,000 to 20,000 people at its height. Some Puma Punku blocks were locked together with I-shaped metal clamps poured into carved channels — a rare technique found at only a handful of ancient sites in the world.
The precision of the cuts, the interchangeable standardized blocks and the hardness of the andesite — which resists modern steel — make Puma Punku a favorite of theorists, who ask what tools an Andean culture around 500–1000 AD could have used.
What makes it unique on this list: The standardization sets it apart: identical, interchangeable stone modules with drill-straight lines, as if made to a blueprint — the most machined-looking ruins on Earth.
