Hundreds of colossal figures etched across the desert — fully legible only from the air.
Across 200 square miles of desert, the ancient Nazca people (c. 500 BC–500 AD) scraped away reddish surface stones to reveal pale ground beneath, creating more than 800 straight lines, 300 geometric shapes and some 70 animal and plant figures, several over 1,000 feet across.
The arid, all-but-windless climate has preserved the lines for up to 2,000 years. The great biomorphs — the hummingbird, the monkey, the spider, and a humanoid figure on a hillside nicknamed “the astronaut” — are each drawn with a single continuous line that never crosses itself.
The figures are so large they can only be seen whole from high above — yet powered flight was millennia away. Why create art no one on the ground could ever take in? Theorists frame the lines as markers or messages meant for something in the sky.
What makes it unique on this list: No site poses the “for whom?” question so starkly: enormous, precise images readable only from the air, made by a people with no known way to fly.

Reached from Lima by way of Paracas. The figures are best seen on a light-aircraft flight over the pampa, often combined with Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
