Some 2,300 miles off the coast of Chile, Rapa Nui holds close to 900 moai — monolithic statues averaging 13 feet and 14 tons, and some far larger — carved from volcanic tuff between roughly 1250 and 1500 by a small Polynesian society.
The statues were carved at the Rano Raraku quarry, where hundreds still remain in every stage of completion — some attached to the bedrock. The largest ever raised weighs about 82 tons; an unfinished giant in the quarry would have stood 69 feet. Many moai once wore multi-ton red-stone topknots set on their heads.
How a modest population carved, moved and raised statues weighing up to 80 tons across miles of terrain — and why they made so many — has fascinated researchers for generations. Islander tradition holds that the moai simply “walked” to their platforms.
What makes it unique on this list: The sheer count against the isolation is the puzzle: nearly a thousand multi-ton statues on a speck of land 2,300 miles from anywhere, with no written explanation left behind.
