The History

Built around 1450 for the emperor Pachacuti and abandoned barely a century later, Machu Picchu sits at 7,970 feet between two peaks. Its temples, terraces and homes are fitted from granite blocks so precisely that a knife blade cannot slip between them — and all without mortar.

Because the Spanish never found it, Machu Picchu was never looted or destroyed; it survived intact until Hiram Bingham brought it to the world's attention in 1911. The site includes solar observatories, hundreds of agricultural terraces, and a spring-fed water system of fountains that still runs today.

The Ancient Alien Connection

The Inca left no written records, so the site's exact purpose and its astonishing stonework invite questions. Theorists note the earthquake-resistant masonry, astronomical stones like the Intihuatana, and how builders shaped hard granite with, as far as we know, only stone and bronze tools.

What makes it unique on this list: It pairs breathtaking engineering with total mystery: a record-free culture built a mortar-free mountaintop city, and we still argue over what it was actually for.
