The most famous stone circle on Earth — a Neolithic instrument tuned to the solstices.
On Salisbury Plain, Stonehenge's outer ring of sarsen stones — up to 25 tons each — was raised around 2500 BC, while its inner bluestones were carried some 150 miles from the hills of Wales. The monument frames the sunrise at midsummer and the sunset at midwinter.
Stonehenge was built in stages across some 1,500 years. The bluestones came first; the giant sarsens followed, dragged about 15 miles and shaped with mortise-and-tenon and tongue-and-groove joints borrowed from woodworking. It sits amid a wider sacred landscape including Durrington Walls and the vast circle at Avebury.
Moving multi-ton bluestones 150 miles, and lifting level lintels atop standing stones, with Neolithic technology is a real puzzle — as is the site's precise solar alignment. What knowledge, or help, made such a feat possible so early?
What makes it unique on this list: It is the oldest precision solar instrument in Europe — proof that a pre-literate society tracked the heavens and moved mountains of stone to mark them.
