Colossal Inca walls of interlocking stone that have outlasted every earthquake since.
Above Cusco, the Inca built Sacsayhuamán from limestone boulders — the largest estimated at more than 100 tons — laid in zigzag walls without mortar, their irregular faces interlocking to a seamless fit.
The three great terraced ramparts were raised in the 15th century. When the Spanish arrived in the 1530s they assumed no human hands could have built them and credited demons. The largest quarry lies miles away, across a river valley from the walls it supplied.
How the Inca cut, moved and fitted multi-ton polygonal stones to such tolerances, without iron tools or the wheel, is still debated. The joints are so exact they have survived quakes that toppled the Spanish buildings raised on top of them.
What makes it unique on this list: Sacsayhuamán is the megalithic-fit champion: irregular, many-sided stones locked together over huge weights so tightly the joints look poured rather than cut.
