In central Anatolia, wind and water sculpted Cappadocia's soft volcanic tuff into fairy-chimney spires, and for millennia people carved back — homes, churches and whole underground cities cut into the rock. Derinkuyu descends some 18 stories and could shelter around 20,000 people with their livestock, food and water.
Who first dug these vast multi-level cities, when, and to hide from what? The scale, the ventilation shafts reaching hundreds of feet down, and the massive rolling stone doors — all engineered without modern tools — are questions ancient-astronaut theorists return to again and again.
Reached via Kayseri or Nevsehir. Cappadocia is famous for sunrise hot-air-balloon flights over its valleys and for cave hotels carved into the rock.
