Capital of the Nabataeans from around the 4th century BC, Petra's monuments — the Treasury and the Monastery among them — were carved directly into sandstone cliffs, sustained by an ingenious network of dams and channels that tamed the desert's flash floods.
The precision of the rock-cut facades, the alignment of key monuments to the solstice sun, and the sophistication of the water engineering in a barren canyon all raise questions about how the Nabataeans achieved so much, so early.
Reached from Amman or Aqaba. The walk through the shadowed Siq to the sunlit Treasury is one of travel's great reveals, often paired with the desert of Wadi Rum.
