Beneath a Roman temple lie stone blocks so vast no known ancient machine could lift them.
At Baalbek — Roman Heliopolis — stand grand temples to Jupiter and Bacchus, but beneath them sits an older podium of monolithic limestone blocks. Three of them, the “Trilithon,” each weigh around 800 tons.
The Romans raised their temples here in the first centuries AD atop that far older platform. In the quarry below lie two even larger abandoned stones — one measured in recent years at roughly 1,650 tons, likely the largest block ever cut by human beings. The Trilithon blocks sit some 20 feet up in the wall.
No known ancient crane could raise an 800-ton block, yet these were quarried, transported and set with joints you cannot slip a needle into. The scale outstrips anything the Romans are documented to have moved — one of the great unanswered questions of ancient engineering.
What makes it unique on this list: Baalbek holds the record: the largest stone blocks ever quarried and moved by people, weights that outstrip anything the Romans, or anyone since, are known to have handled.
